The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification designed to prepare adults to study in higher education. The Diploma could help you to get into higher education or give you a second chance at a graduate career by giving you an introduction to a different subject area.
Within these diplomas, subject choices are: Biology, Chemistry, Creative Writing, English Language & Literature, German, History, Politics & International Relations, Human Physiology, Professional Healthcare Practice, Psychology and Statistical & Mathematical Methods.
Overview
The full-time Access to HE course runs from early September to late June. In that time you will study three subjects from your chosen diploma. Each subject will take 3 hours of classroom time in addition to a minimum of 3.5 hours of independent study. Including Academic Study Skills, this should take approximately 25 – 30 hours a week. Classes are delivered by tutors who are experts in their field, and learners regularly benefit from visiting speakers. In addition, students are invited to participate in extra-curricular activities such as the popular critical thinking course.
Classes can be taken during the day-time or evening depending on your choice of subjects. The Access to HE diploma, validated by ASCENTIS, will earn you 60 credits, which is recognised accreditation for entry into university.
What Will I Study?
Students will carry out academic study within their three chosen subjects. They will also work on study skills of an academic nature i.e. essay-writing and study skills of a practical nature i.e. time-management. Students wanting to progress on to university will receive help and support with their UCAS application and personal statement.
Entry Requirements
Eligible students should have grade 4/C or above in English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent). If you do not hold these qualifications, it is possible to take GCSE's alongside your Access course. If you are required to take both English and Maths alongside your course, you will need to enrol on a part-time basis. Screening will be arranged to ascertain suitability if required.
Materials
You will need pens, paper and access to a computer.
Progression
Upon completion, many students apply for university entrance, while some progress professionally through promotions or career changes. Access to HE students benefit from careers guidance from the college's dedicated careers team as well as excellent links with local universities.
