Introduction

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a nationally-recognised Level 3 qualification designed to prepare adults to study in higher education. The Diploma could help you to get into higher education or give you a second chance at a graduate career by giving you an introduction to a different subject area.

Students can choose from a variety of diplomas:

Within these diplomas, subject choices are: Biology, Chemistry, Creative Writing, English Language & Literature, German, History, Politics & International Relations, Human Physiology, Professional Healthcare Practice, Psychology and Statistical & Mathematical Methods.

Overview

The part-time Access to HE course runs from early September to late June for two consecutive years. In that time you will have to study three subjects from your chosen diploma. You can take one or two in your first year and the remaining one/s in your second year. Each subject will take 3 hours of classroom time in addition to a minimum of 3.5 hours of independent study. Depending on how many subjects you take in the year, and with the inclusion of study skills, this should take approximately 15 – 20 hours a week. Classes are delivered by tutors who are experts in their field, and learners regularly benefit from visiting speakers. In addition, students are invited to participate in extra-curricular activities such as the popular critical thinking course.

Classes can be taken during the day or evening determined by your choice of subjects. This course is validated by Ascentis and will earn you 60 credits, which is recognised accreditation for entry into university.

What Will I Study?

Students will carry out academic study within their three chosen subjects. They will also work on study skills of an academic nature i.e. essay-writing and study skills of a practical nature i.e. time-management. Students wanting to progress on to university will receive help and support with their UCAS application and personal statement.

Entry Requirements

Eligible students should have grade 4/C or above in English and Maths GCSE (or equivalent). If you do not hold these qualifications, it is possible to take GCSE's alongside your Access course. If you are required to take both English and Maths alongside your course, you will need to enrol on a part-time basis. Screening will be arranged to ascertain suitability if required.
