Overview

This intensive one-day workshop gives you the practical skills and confidence to measure, construct, and hang a professional, lined Roman Blind. Say goodbye to mass-produced window treatments and expensive custom services—you’ll learn how to perfectly tailor blinds to any window in your home, allowing you the creative freedom of choosing any fabric you desire.

What Will I Study?

The day is structured to take you through the process of blind-making from start to finish, including:

  • Learn how to select appropriate fabrics (weight, pattern repeat, drape) for the best visual and functional effect.
  • Detailed instruction on how to accurately measure window recesses and outside mounts, accounting for fabric shrinkage, seam allowances and pattern placement.
  • Understanding the different types of headrail/cassette systems available and their benefits
  • Step-by-step guidance on constructing your blinds, including how to calculate drop depth, fold lengths and attaching a lining.
  • Finally, you will learn how to attach your blind to the chosen cassette and hang it.

Entry Requirements

None, but it would be a significant advantage to be familiar with operating a standard sewing machine (threading and simple straight stitching).

Materials

You will be provided with detailed pre-class instructions prior to this course, which will be emailed to you.

Important Size Restriction: To ensure you can successfully complete the project in the allotted time and due to classroom space limitations, the maximum finished blind size you can construct during the class is 80cm wide by 150cm deep. If you require larger blinds, we strongly recommend using the class time to construct a scaled-down trial blind (e.g., half-width/half-depth) using your actual fabric.

You are required to provide:

  • Roman Blind Cassette/Headrail: Purchase a complete ready-to-use cassette/rail system suitable for your chosen blind size (available from homeware stores or online). Specific advice on brands and features will be provided.
  • Fabric and Lining: Your chosen face fabric and corresponding lining fabric, ensuring you have purchased the quantity calculated using the pre-class instructions.
  • Thread.
  • Basic Sewing Kit: Fabric shears, paper scissors, pins, chalk/erasable marker, tape measure, seam ripper.

Modern, serviced sewing machines will be provided for use during the workshop.
