Overview

Celebrate the arrival of spring and get ready for Easter with our Willow Weaving: Make an Egg Basket in a Day workshop! In this fun, hands-on day of traditional craft, you’ll learn the art of willow weaving and create your very own beautiful and functional egg basket to take home.

What Will I Study?

Led by expert tutor, Louise Brown, this sociable and creative workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone curious about basketry. You’ll be guided through the entire process—from selecting and preparing the willow, to weaving the base, shaping the sides, and finishing with a sturdy handle. Along the way, you’ll learn traditional techniques, gain insight into working with natural materials, and enjoy a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

You will cover:

  • Understanding types of willow used in basket making;
  • Preparation of willow;
  • How to manipulate willow;
  • Use of basket makers’ tools;
  • Basic weaving techniques

As with all craftwork, basketry skills take some time to acquire and students should not be upset if they do not achieve perfection first time around!

Entry Requirements

None - this course is suitable for all! Please note that a certain amount of manual dexterity is required in order to bend and shape the willow. Throughout the workshop, students may occasionally use specialist basketry tools, most of which are either sharp or pointed, so a sensible and common-sense approach to safety is essential.

Materials

Material costs for willow required for the classroom activities have been included in the course fee. The tutor provides all specialist tools required for the workshop, for use in the classroom.

Please wear practical clothing and bring a work apron – damp willow can be a bit dirty.

Progression

You could enrol onto one of our other willow workshops or our beginners basketry course.
