Overview

Become a teacher in a college, sixth form or training centre on this Further Education and Skills PGCE, and support and inspire students aged 16 and above as they prepare to take their first career steps. You’ll develop the confidence and skills to become a reflective and resilient further education teacher, and also explore how to teach and design learning programmes. This course is run part-time over two years and you will be expected to attend college one evening per week. Students are required to teach at least 100 hours per year and carry out 75 non-teaching hours each year. 

Once you graduate, you’ll have the teaching qualification you need to begin your teaching career in further education colleges, sixth-forms and private training providers. Please note that this course is subject to validation.

What Will I Study?

Students on this course will learn the most effective teaching techniques by spending time on teaching placements in real education settings and exploring teaching theory in lectures and seminars. 

The course provides a strong theoretical and research‐based perspective to extend your knowledge and understanding and allow you to reflect critically upon your own personal and  professional values.  You will learn a range of teaching and learning strategies, including theories, principles and models of lesson planning, curriculum design and assessment.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Formal qualifications, experiential learning and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) are also considered.

Materials

You will need to purchase some text books and recommended reading. This will be discussed further during your introductory sessions.

Progression

Once you graduate, you’ll have the teaching qualification you need to begin your teaching career in further education colleges, sixth-forms and private training providers. 

You could also continue your study by enrolling on a Masters course, such as an MA in Education.
