Overview

The Introduction to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) CPD Course is designed for mental health professionals who are new to EMDR therapy and interested in understanding its fundamental principles and techniques. This course is suitable for clinicians looking to broaden their therapeutic skill set and integrate EMDR into their practice, as well as for those considering more in-depth EMDR training. The course is delivered over one weekend.

What Will I Study?

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the core concepts, history, and practical applications of EMDR therapy. Participants will explore the theoretical underpinnings of EMDR, including the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which serves as the framework for understanding how EMDR facilitates trauma processing and promotes psychological healing.

Through a blend of lectures, discussions, and introductory demonstrations, students will gain insight into the following:

  • The foundational history and development of EMDR therapy
  • Key principles and therapeutic protocols used in EMDR sessions
  • Basic techniques to facilitate bilateral stimulation and its role in processing trauma
  • Initial applications of EMDR to common presenting issues, such as anxiety, phobias, and PTSD

Participants will also have the opportunity to observe the core phases of EMDR treatment and begin developing an understanding of how to prepare clients for EMDR. This introductory course is not a substitute for full EMDR certification but provides an essential grounding in its concepts and applications.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to all registered mental health practitioners with an interest in trauma-informed therapy. No previous EMDR experience is required.

Materials

All course materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a notepad and pen for note-taking.

Progression

On completion, participants will receive a certificate of attendance. This introductory course may serve as a stepping stone toward full EMDR certification. Those interested in further training can pursue an accredited EMDR certification program, which will enable them to integrate EMDR fully into their therapeutic practice.
