Overview

This course is for adults who want to study French completely from scratch - you do not need any previous knowledge to join. Throughout the course, participants will gain the ability to communicate in everyday situations, such as introducing yourself, travelling, shopping etc. You will also be introduced to fun aspects of French culture.

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will be encouraged to read the materials used during lessons and refer to the course book.

What Will I Study?

You will learn vocabulary and grammar using all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) on practical topics to enable you to communicate. You will discover the use of the present tense (only high frequency verbs), pronunciation of difficult sounds and vocabulary for describing food, people and places.

We will cover a range of topics, which may include:

  • Learning how to understand menus, and food names when shopping
  • Learning how to communicate while shopping
  • Talking about yourself – your family, hobbies, daily activities, future plans
  • Travel – how to get to places, travelling by train, making enquiries or bookings, numbers and payment, etc.
  • Dealing with problems such as going to the doctor's or chemist's
  • Understanding weather phrases

You will also be studying the grammar of the language. Some of the grammar points to be studied are:

  • Start to learn the present tense, principally high frequency irregular verbs
  • Start to  learn the future tense with aller
  • Indefinite, definite and relative pronouns
  • Feminine and masculine noun gender endings
