Overview

This course is for adults who have studied the language before, have a basic knowledge of Italian and can cope with basic "tourist conversations". To join at this level, you should have two years previous study, or equivalent, of the language with an understanding of the present and the past tenses.

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will be encouraged to read the materials used during lessons and refer to the course book.  The tutor aims to create a lively, encouraging atmosphere in which all students can learn through individual, pair work and class discussions.

What Will I Study?

You will expand your vocabulary and grammar (using all four language skills - speaking, listening, reading and writing) on practical topics to enable you to communicate. We will revise the present and past tenses and the agreements between determiners, nouns and adjectives.  Students will learn commands and the future tense and how to express opinions on a wide variety of topics.

You will learn to:

  • read short texts and complete relevant worksheets
  • write sentences and translate simple texts into Italian
  • listen to the tutor and a variety of audio materials
  • watch interesting videos which supplement the course book
  • speak in class, in pairs and in group discussions

Entry Requirements

To join at this level, you should be able to understand basic written texts that use the present and past tenses and be able to read aloud fairly accurately. You should also be able to answer some basic questions about yourself.

Materials

Please bring pen, paper and a folder. Text books will be discussed at the first session.

Progression

We offer a Semester 2 course that begins immediately after Semester 1 and is an integral part of the course, the exact length of which will be decided in the spring term. You would then be able to progress to the next level.
