The BA (Hons) in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities is a one year ‘top-up’ course, which has been designed for those who have completed the Foundation Degree in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (or equivalent qualification at level 5) and want to progress on to achieve a full Bachelor of Arts degree with honours. The qualification is designed and developed for those working with children from Early Years through to secondary age who have additional needs.

This programme is quality assured by Middlesex University and you will receive a Middlesex award on successful completion. The course is structured to allow students to work alongside study; attendance is once a week 1-7pm. 

On this course, you will explore a range of philosophical, psychological and sociological perspectives and consider how each perspective underpins different approaches to SEND. You will consider a range of social and emotional learning programmes and the theoretical frameworks they are based on, to facilitate critical analysis of key issues in research. 

You will practice, investigate and research key issues such as children's learning and development, behaviour management, diversity and inclusion. In addition, you will develop your ability to lead, support and work collaboratively and effectively with others such as parents, carers and other professionals, and learn to recognise and challenge inequalities in society.

You will study the following modules: 

• Research project within the curriculum pathway
• Managing social and emotional aspects of learning
• Exploring the philosophical dimensions of SEND within education and beyond
• Exploring contemporary issues
• Learning in the outdoor environment

All eligible applicants will be required to undertake an interview. Students should be employed in the SEND sector and have either a Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Foundation Degree (or equivalent qualification at level 5) or a degree in an unrelated subject with a substantial experience of working with children in SEND Education. You should have achieved GCSE at Grade C/4 or above (or recognised equivalents) in English and Mathematics.

All students who are not currently employed in an educational setting will require Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks prior to the start of the course.

The course prepares students for a senior role in a SEND setting as well as potential progression to a PGCE course to qualify as a primary school teacher.
