Overview

Join us for this friendly and relaxed one-day sewing workshop, focusing on the Japanese technique of Sashiko Hand Embroidery. Rooted in centuries-old Japanese craft, Sashiko—meaning “little stabs”—is a decorative and meditative hand-stitching technique known for its geometric patterns and understated elegance. It is commonly used for the decorative and/or functional reinforcement of cloth and clothing.

What Will I Study?

This relaxed and friendly day will guide you through the history, tools, and stitching methods of Sashiko embroidery. You’ll learn how to transfer traditional patterns, use authentic materials, and develop your rhythm with the signature running stitch. By the end of the day, you’ll have created your own stitched sampler or a small finished piece, such as a coaster or panel, to take home..

Entry Requirements

None. This course is perfect for beginners and experienced stitchers alike.

Materials

Please bring along some fabric scraps for doing samplers and a selection of Sashiko threads for use on the day. Your tutor will contact you ahead of the course starting to advise on any specific materials you will need to bring. 

Progression

The course could lead to further advancements in sewing skills by participating in future sewing classes.
