Overview

In this relaxed and creative one-day workshop, we’ll explore vibrant colour, expressive collage, and playful composition inspired by the work of Henri Matisse. Taking influence from Matisse’s bold paper cut-outs, simplified shapes and imaginative use of colour, we’ll experiment with collage, painting, drawing and mixed-media techniques to create expressive and personal artworks.

This session is perfect for anyone looking to explore their creativity, develop confidence with colour and experiment with composition in a supportive environment. No experience is needed to join - just an interest in art, colour and making!

What Will I Study?

You can choose to work on paper, card, canvas, or in a sketchbook, with no pressure to produce a finished piece. Instead, this workshop is about experimenting with shape, colour relationships, layering, and composition to develop your own creative ideas.

We will explore various techniques, such as cutting and arranging painted papers in the style of Matisse’s cut-outs, combining collage with drawing and painting and creating bold compositions using simplified organic forms. We will also experiment with colour contrast, pattern, texture and layering to create energetic and expressive work inspired by nature, interiors and abstract forms.

Entry Requirements

None - this course is open to all with an interest in art!
