In this 8-week course, you will explore the creative and expressive world of poetry through reading, discussion and practical writing exercises. Designed for beginners as well as those with some writing experience, the course offers a supportive and encouraging environment in which to experiment with language, develop confidence and discover your own poetic voice.
Throughout the course, you will read a variety of contemporary and classic poems, explore different poetic styles and forms and respond to a range of creative prompts and activities. You will learn how poets use imagery, sound, rhythm, memory, emotion, and observation to create meaning and atmosphere within their work.
The course also encourages reflection, sharing, and discussion, helping you develop your writing through gentle feedback and group workshops. By the end of the course, you will have created a collection of original poems and gained confidence in reading and discussing poetry aloud.
Please note that there will be no class on 30th September, or on 21st and 28th October.
The course will introduce you to a range of poetry styles, techniques and creative writing approaches. Through guided exercises and discussion, you will explore how poetry can capture moments, memories, emotions and experiences in imaginative and meaningful ways.
Topics covered during the course will include:
Throughout the course, you will gradually build a portfolio of your own original poetry.
This course is ideal for anyone with an interest in poetry, creative writing, or self-expression. No previous experience of writing poetry is required - just a willingness to experiment with language and ideas in a supportive group setting. More experienced writers are also welcome and will have opportunities to further develop their creative practice.
Basic materials will be provided where appropriate, although learners may wish to bring a notebook, folder, or laptop for writing and keeping drafts of their work. You are also encouraged to bring along poems, books, or pieces of writing that inspire you and that you may wish to discuss during the course.
Following this course, you may wish to progress onto one of our other creative writing, literature, or expressive arts courses to continue developing your writing skills and creative confidence.
