In this 10-week course, you will explore a range of creative textile techniques to create beautiful and expressive textile artwork inspired by coastal landscapes and still life themes. Designed for both beginners and those with some experience in textile arts, the course will guide you through developing layered textile pieces that capture the colours, textures, and atmosphere of the seaside, or other still life subjects.
You will experiment with both traditional and contemporary textile techniques to interpret shells, sea grasses, harbours, weathered textures, vessels, flowers, and everyday objects through stitch and mixed media. Throughout the course, you will develop confidence in combining fabric, texture, colour, and composition to produce unique finished artworks suitable for display in the home.
If you have no experience using a sewing machine, we strongly recommend you complete one of our short ‘Getting to Know a Sewing Machine’ workshops prior to enrolling.
What Will I Study?
The course will cover a variety of creative textile and mixed media techniques, including:
Free Motion Embroidery
Stitch Dissolve and Trapunto
Textures and Tucks
Fabric Painting
Couching
Hand Embroidery and Appliqué
These techniques will be explored through projects inspired by coastal scenery and still life compositions, allowing you to experiment with texture, layering, shape, and colour to create a series of textile artworks and a final decorative piece.
Entry Requirements
This course is ideal for anyone interested in textile arts and creative stitching, whether you are a beginner looking to learn new skills or an experienced maker wishing to develop a more artistic approach to textiles. It is particularly suited to those who enjoy drawing inspiration from nature, coastal environments and still life subjects.
As mentioned above, if you have no experience with a sewing machine, we strongly recommend you attend one of our short ‘Getting to Know a Sewing Machine’ workshops prior to enrolling.
Materials
Basic materials will be provided; however, you will be encouraged to bring your own fabrics, threads, found materials, and inspirational imagery related to coastal and still life themes. Your tutor will advise further on materials in the first session.
Progression
Following this course, you may wish to progress onto one of our other sewing, textile art, or mixed media creative courses to continue developing your skills and personal style.
