Overview

This 20 week course builds upon basic Greek language skills to develop conversation skills and cultural understanding. Students will expand their vocabulary, master more complex grammatical structures, and engage in basic conversations on diverse topics. The course emphasises practical application through immersive activities and materials.

What Will I Study?

In this course, you will:

  • Expand your communication skills by learning how to ask for clarification, such as the meaning or spelling of words, and how to talk about prices, preferences, and money. 
  • Practice describing people and objects, discussing time, days of the week, and daily routines. 
  • Learn to give and ask for directions, order food and drinks in a café, express opinions, talk about age and identity, transportation and travel. 
  • Further explore Greek culture

These lessons help learners move from basic to more confident and practical communication in Greek.

Entry Requirements

Students wishing to join this course would ideally have completed our 10 week Introduction to Greek course or similar. Attendees should:

  • Be familiar with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation.
  • Be able to communicate in simple everyday situations. 
  • Know how to greet others, introduce themselves, and exchange basic personal details such as name, origin, address, occupation, and family status. 
  • Be comfortable with numbers, giving simple affirmative or negative answers, and talking about the languages they speak.

Materials

You may need to purchase a textbook, which will be discussed in the first session. You will need to bring a pen and paper for note-taking. Additional handouts and audio resources will be provided to support your learning. Access to a Greek-English dictionary is recommended. 

Progression

We offer a Semester 2 course in the summer term. It begins immediately after Semester 1 and is an integral part of the course, the exact length of which will be decided in the spring term. After completing this course students can progress to the next level of the language.
