Overview

We are delighted to introduce this brand-new course, led by local author and illustrator, Margaret Sturton. Margaret’s debut picture book, ‘A Fox called Herbert’, was published in 2020 and was long listed for the Klauss Flugge Prize, short listed for the Jalak Prize, and was read aloud by Stephen Fry and Sarah, Duchess of York.

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of children's book illustration, combining practical skill development with analysis of successful picture books. Students will develop both technical illustration skills and an understanding of how visual elements support storytelling in children's literature.

What Will I Study?

The class will explore exemplary picture books for inspiration, as well as carrying out observational drawing exercises. Sessions will involve collaborative critique and discussion of how the drawings could evolve into picture book narratives.

You will explore:

  • Pattern and Mark Making: Exploring various techniques to create distinctive textures and patterns that bring visual interest to illustrations
  • Tone: Mastering the use of light and shadow to create mood, atmosphere, and dimensional depth
  • Perspective and Eye-lines: Understanding viewpoint and spatial relationships to guide the reader's eye through the story
  • Composition: Learning to arrange visual elements effectively to create balanced, dynamic, and engaging page layouts
  • Using a Limited Palette: Developing colour strategy skills to create cohesive illustrations with restricted colour schemes.

Entry Requirements

No experience needed, just an interest in drawing, sketching and children's picture books! Some experience of observational drawing would be useful, but is not necessary.
