We are delighted to introduce this brand-new course, led by local author and illustrator, Margaret Sturton. Margaret’s debut picture book, ‘A Fox called Herbert’, was published in 2020 and was long listed for the Klauss Flugge Prize, short listed for the Jalak Prize, and was read aloud by Stephen Fry and Sarah, Duchess of York.
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of children's book illustration, combining practical skill development with analysis of successful picture books. Students will develop both technical illustration skills and an understanding of how visual elements support storytelling in children's literature.

What Will I Study?

Tone: Mastering the use of light and shadow to create mood, atmosphere, and dimensional depth
Perspective and Eye-lines: Understanding viewpoint and spatial relationships to guide the reader's eye through the story
Composition: Learning to arrange visual elements effectively to create balanced, dynamic, and engaging page layouts
Using a Limited Palette: Developing colour strategy skills to create cohesive illustrations with restricted colour schemes.
