Overview

We are thrilled to introduce this new course from September 2025. Join our expert tutor, Dr James Connelly, on this friendly and relaxed course to explores the history, culture and the legacy of the peoples who shaped early England.
You will explore their migration to Britain and the rise of powerful kingdoms that dominated the landscape for 500 years. You will learn about how they lived and left their mark on history and discover it in their own words, through the writings they left behind. There will be a particular focus on Winchester, the Royal Capital of the Kingdom of Wessex, and the surrounding area. We will explore legendary or infamous kings like Alfred the Great and Æthelred the Unready and the treasures they left behind.

What Will I Study?

Topics include:

  • Week One – Who were the Anglo-Saxons?
  • Week Two: The Heptarchy: The Seven Kingdoms
  • Week Three: The Vikings and the Rise of Wessex
  • Week Four: Alfred the Great: The man
  • Week Five Alfred the Great: The Myth
  • Week Six: Winchester pt 1: The Royal Capital
  • Week Seven: Winchester pt 2: The Minster (Winchester Cathedral)
  • Week Eight: Æthelstan, the First King of England
  • Week Nine: Holding back the tides: Æthelred the Unready and King Cnut
  • Week Ten: 1066 and all that: William the Conqueror and the Norman Conquest

Entry Requirements

No prior knowledge of history is needed- just a curiosity for the past and a love for great stories!

Materials

No equipment required – although a pen/paper or a laptop may be handy to take notes.

Progression

Students will develop an appreciation for the past and a richer understanding of not only what happened but of the people themselves. If this is sufficient interest, we may introduce continuation courses and further History topics.
