Overview

This one-day workshop is perfect for beginners and those with some experience who want to explore painting in a relaxed and supportive environment. We’ll be looking at natural objects such as shells, flowers, and leaves, learning how to capture their shapes, textures, and shadows. There’s no pressure to create a finished piece—this is all about experimenting and having fun with different materials.

What Will I Study?

We will start by looking closely at natural forms and doing some simple sketches to get used to their shapes. Then, we’ll explore different ways to use paint, brushes, and other tools to bring out textures and details.

You’ll be encouraged to try layering, contrast, and different mark-making techniques to add depth and interest to your work.

Entry Requirements

None - this course is open to all abilities.

Materials

Please bring a few natural objects such as shells, leaves, flowers, or anything else with an interesting shape or texture. You can use acrylic paints or watercolours—whatever you feel comfortable with. A variety of brushes will be useful, from small ones for details to larger ones for broader strokes.

You can work on paper, in a sketchbook, or on a canvas if you prefer. Brown paper is also a great material to experiment with, adding an earthy, textured background to your work. If you enjoy drawing, bring pencils, charcoal, pastels, or even chalk for additional textures and marks.

If you're unsure about what to bring, don’t worry too much—just bring what you already have at home. The tutor will also have a selection of personal supplies available to share, so there’s no need to purchase anything specific unless you’d like to. Water jars and palettes will be available on site for use during the workshop.

Progression
