Overview

This beginner-friendly woodwork course is designed for individuals looking to embark on their woodworking journey or enhance their existing skills. Whether you're completely new to the craft or have dabbled in woodworking before, this course will provide you with the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience to confidently create small, functional items for your home and garden.

What Will I Study?

You will learn the basics of woodworking, including essential techniques and tool usage. The course begins with a comprehensive introduction to workshop health and safety practices. You'll learn how to operate tools and machinery safely, the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE), and best practices for maintaining a safe and organised workspace.

Participants will be shown how to mark out wood accurately, cut, join and assemble, as well as learning how to finish wood to a high standard. The aim is to work through a series of guided projects in order to build skills and confidence. Potential projects could include: birdfeeders, wine racks, spice racks or kitchen roll dispensers. These projects are designed to be both educational and rewarding, allowing you to create useful items that you can proudly display or use in your home.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course. Just a willingness to learn and follow health and safety practices within the workshop.

Materials

Please note that students are required to provide their own timber for the course and will need to bring it with them to each class. The timber required will be PSE softwood 145mm x 20mm x3000mm. You will be able to buy this from a local timber merchant – our tutor uses Chandler’s Ford Timber Merchants. As a guide, the cost will be approximately £5 per metre, although this may vary by supplier, so do shop around. The merchants should be able to cut the timber if required to fit into vehicles.

All students should be aware that at the end of each session, you will be expected to take your projects home. This is to allow us to keep the workshop space clear and organised for future classes.

Tools and sundries will be provided.

Progression

By the end of this course, you will have gained a solid foundation in woodworking, completed several projects, and developed the confidence to continue exploring this rewarding craft. If there is sufficient demand, we will be able to offer an improvers course allowing students to progress on to more advanced skills and projects.
