Overview

Willow weaving is a timeless and rewarding hobby that offers a unique blend of creativity and craftsmanship. Come along to this friendly and relaxed workshop, to learn this ancient craft under the guidance of expert tutor, Louise Brown. You will create a beautiful obelisk that can be used as decor in your garden, or as a support for plants.

What Will I Study?

Your tutor will introduce you to willow as a weaving material, teaching you how to identify suitable willow rods for weaving, based on flexibility, length and thickness. You will learn how to prepare willow safely using the appropriate tools, before being given step-by-step guidance in building the framework for your obelisk, including measuring, cutting and assembling the willow rods.

By the end of the workshop, you will have crafted your very own willow obelisk, perfect for adding a touch of natural beauty and structure to your garden.

Entry Requirements

None - this course is suitable for everyone. A certain amount of manual strength and dexterity is required when working with willow; however, the projects covered in this workshop have been selected for their relative simplicity and suitability for beginners.

Throughout the workshop, students may occasionally use specialist basketry tools, most of which are either sharp or pointed, so a sensible and common-sense approach to safety is essential.

Materials

Material costs for willow required for the classroom activities have been included in the course fee. The tutor provides all specialist tools required for the workshop, for use in the classroom.

Please wear practical clothing and bring a work apron – damp willow can be a bit dirty.

Progression

Learners may wish to attend further willow-weaving workshops. There is a lot to learn on this topic and students may wish to consolidate their learning with another one or two-day project.
