Overview

Welcome to our 10-week Patchwork Quilting for Beginners course, designed for adults who want to explore the timeless art of quilting.

On this introductory course you will create a unique sampler quilt, either a lap quilt or a wall-hanging. Over 10 weeks you will learn the fundamentals of quilting, from selecting fabrics and cutting precise shapes to assembling beautiful patchwork designs. We'll cover essential techniques such as cutting, sewing, and layering, and you'll have the chance to work on your own project. If you wish, your project can be in a theme of your choice e.g. seasons, characters,  celebrations such as Christmas or keepsake fabrics.

Please note there will be no class on 1st October.

What Will I Study?

  • How to choose and place fabrics for best effect
  • Five block techniques: patchwork, foundation piecing, log cabin and applique by hand and machine.
  • Block layout and quilt top construction, including borders
  • Layering the quilt – top, wadding and backing
  • Hand and machine quilting
  • Finishing techniques – binding your quilt

Entry Requirements

This course is for anyone with an interest in sewing, no experience needed. All techniques will be taught by hand and machine, you can choose which to do for your own quilt.

Please note that although not compulsory, some basic sewing machine knowledge would be useful. If you are completely new to using a machine, you might want to consider taking our short ‘Getting to know your sewing machine’ workshop.

Our supportive and friendly environment ensures that you’ll have plenty of guidance, creative inspiration, and opportunities to connect with fellow quilters.

Materials

You will need to source or purchase your own fabrics so that you can work in a style or colour of your choosing. You can use existing fabrics, such as old clothing, or purchase material according to your personal preference. The amount needed will depend on your chosen project and your tutor will discuss this with you in your first session. Basic materials and sewing machines will be provided.

Progression

This course could lead to a new wonderfully creative hobby in patchwork and quilting, an increasingly popular art form as well as a relaxing craft. Further study could lead to advanced skills in textile art through Adult and Higher Education courses and even a career in textiles.
