Overview

This exciting new 10-week course will introduce you to a variety of sewing techniques by hand and machine. You will create unique, useful and beautiful objects for your home or to gift to others. No special skills are required but you can make the pieces individual by introducing your own ideas and designs if you are a more experienced sewer.  You will learn to make a table or bed runner, a casserole cosy for pot-luck suppers, insulated table mats, an apron and a cushion. 

What Will I Study?

  • How to choose and place suitable fabrics for best effect and practicality
  • Sewing techniques
  • Patchwork for the table or bed runner and table mats
  • Quilting and layering for the Pot-Luck casserole cosy
  • Simple Pattern drafting and cutting for the Apron
  • Machine and hand embroidery on the Apron
  • Inserting a zip, buttons and button holes on the cushion
  • Binding techniques to finish your projects

Entry Requirements

This course for anyone with an interest in sewing, no experience needed. All techniques will be taught by hand and machine so you can choose which to do for your own projects. If you’ve done some sewing before, you will learn new techniques and tips to make your sewing both easier and more precise. 

Materials

Sewing machines and some basic tools/materials are provided. You will need to source/purchase your own fabrics so that you can create in a style and colour of your choosing. Fabric amounts and materials needed will depend on your own personal choice of project and your tutor will advise further in the first session.

Progression

This course can lead to a new, wonderfully creative sewing hobby, an increasingly popular art form as well as a relaxing craft. Further study could lead to advanced skills in textile art through Adult and Higher Education courses and even a career in textiles.
