Overview

Building on the basics of dressmaking, this Dressmaking for Improvers course is designed for individuals who have foundational sewing skills and are looking to advance their abilities. This 10-week course will help you to further build your confidence in using a sewing machine and develop your skills and techniques for constructing garments to allow you to tackle more challenging projects.

Please note that you will need to bring your own materials including patterns. Your tutor will advise beforehand what to bring.

What Will I Study?

You will learn how to sew a variety of different seams and their uses and how to make adjustments to a commercial pattern (pattern grading). You will also learn about pattern markings, pinning on and cutting out fabrics, order of work, edge finishes and hems, facings and bindings, buttons, button holes and zips.

Participants will work on two projects throughout the course:

  • A simple blouse with buttons and button holes and a neck facing
  • A garment of your choice

These projects are designed to challenge your skills and help you gain experience with more advanced techniques.

Entry Requirements

Previous knowledge of using a sewing machine is preferred. If you have any queries regarding your suitability, please get in touch.

Materials

You will need to purchase a pattern and fabrics, depending on your choice of garment and colour/fabric preferences. Your tutor will contact you beforehand to advise on materials required for the first session. Sewing machines and tools will be provided.
