Overview

This 6-week course is designed as a follow-on course for the ‘Beginners guide to textiles techniques’. However, it is also suitable for those who have not taken the beginners course, but who have a working knowledge of using a sewing machine and are more confident in their sewing.

Students will be shown a range of techniques including Batik, free machining on soluble fabric and couching. This course will give students the creative freedom to experiment and use these techniques in their own projects. The difference between this course and the beginner’s course is that there is more time to develop each technique, whereas the beginner’s course is a whistle-stop tour of textiles techniques.

What Will I Study?

This course is designed to enable students to create individual and personal textile pieces using a range of materials. There will be a demonstration of each technique at the beginning of class. The rest of the class time will be dedicated to students own experimentation of the techniques shown. This course gives students the creative space, materials and advice from the tutor to help develop their existing skills.

There may be some work students could do as homework each week, but the tasks would be small and optional.

You will cover:

  • Experimenting with dyeing techniques including, tie-dyeing, folding and batik
  • Experimentation with free machine embroidery, sewing onto dyed fabrics
  • Free machine embroidery on dissolvable fabric
  • Couching using yarns, paper and fabric
  • Stitch and cut fabric manipulation
  • Applique on fabric

Additional time will be available in the last 2 sessions for students to develop their samples made in previous weeks
