Overview

Our one-day Saturday workshops offer beginners an opportunity both to learn and apply the basic skills of jewellery making. It is also offered as an Open Studio for those with more experience wishing to improve on their skills or work independently on personal projects, whilst having access to an experienced tutor.

Participants will learn a range of skills and techniques, enabling them to work with silver. You will be guided as you design and make a small piece of silverware or jewellery (such as a ring, brooch, spoon).

Please note that the cost of materials is not included in the course fee as this will depend on the piece you make and weight of silver that you use.

What Will I Study?

This is a real hands-on day learning about the equipment, skills and techniques required to make unique and personal pieces of jewellery. Once you have mastered the basic techniques there are a variety of options you can undertake with the support of experienced and enthusiastic tutors.

Techniques covered on the day may include:

  • Measuring and cutting
  • Annealing & pickling
  • Using a piercing saw
  • Using a blow torch to solder joints with silver solder
  • Filing, shaping and planishing
  • Raising (hammer work) and polishing

Using these skills, you can also try other techniques such as:

  • Stone setting (bezel/rub over) - using mounting and setting techniques to set a simple oval stone, so that it can be mounted on a necklace, brooch or ring.
  • EF Enamelling - learn how to add colour to your work using EF Enamelling techniques, a process which you can also do at home.
  • More advanced personal projects - such as casting
