Overview

Our one-day Saturday workshops offer beginners an opportunity both to learn and apply the basic skills of jewellery making. It is also offered as an Open Studio for those with more experience wishing to improve on their skills or work independently on personal projects, whilst having access to an experienced tutor.

Participants will learn a range of skills and techniques, enabling them to work with silver. You will be guided as you design and make a small piece of silverware or jewellery (such as a ring, brooch, spoon).

Please note that the cost of materials is not included in the course fee as this will depend on the piece you make and weight of silver that you use.

What Will I Study?

This is a real hands-on day learning about the equipment, skills and techniques required to make unique and personal pieces of jewellery. Once you have mastered the basic techniques there are a variety of options you can undertake with the support of experienced and enthusiastic tutors.

Techniques covered on the day may include:

  • Measuring and cutting
  • Annealing & pickling
  • Using a piercing saw
  • Using a blow torch to solder joints with silver solder
  • Filing, shaping and planishing
  • Raising (hammer work) and polishing

Using these skills, you can also try other techniques such as:

  • Stone setting (bezel/rub over) - using mounting and setting techniques to set a simple oval stone, so that it can be mounted on a necklace, brooch or ring.
  • EF Enamelling - learn how to add colour to your work using EF Enamelling techniques, a process which you can also do at home.
  • More advanced personal projects - such as casting

Entry Requirements

No previous experience or qualifications are required to join the workshop.

Materials

The cost of materials is not included in the course fee as it will depend on current market value and the weight used. It is possible to make a ring using 5 grams of silver and as a guideline, an approximate cost of materials required / used for the day is upwards from £25.00. This will vary according to the choice of items and the weight of the pieces you make.

Please note that silver prices fluctuate, so it is not possible to be exact about the current market value. You may wish to use an alternative material as a beginner as you learn the skills required to make jewellery. The tutors will guide you – please contact us if you wish to discuss ahead of the course.

The material costs for your pieces are payable direct to the tutor who supplies it. The tutors have a contactless card machine or you can pay by cash. If you prefer to bring your own silver on the day, please contact the tutor in advance. One possible outlet is www.cooksongold.com.

You may wish to bring a packed lunch and refreshments as there are no open catering facilities on site.

Please wear appropriate clothing for a workshop environment i.e. no open toed shoes or sandals; long hair suitably controlled and no floaty clothing/sleeves, all of which may present a hazard when working with equipment necessary for this course. Please bring an apron with you to protect your clothing.
