Overview

This course is for adults who have already done at least six years of Italian or similar, and who have an intermediate knowledge of the language. 

You should be able to successfully communicate in settings you might encounter when travelling abroad (order at a restaurant, buy a ticket at a museum etc), but also be able to discuss conversational topics such as hobbies, memories, future plans and wishes. You should also have started to work on expressing your opinions, doubts and advice in conversation. 

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will be encouraged to read the materials used during the lessons.

What Will I Study?

You will:

  • expand your vocabulary and grammar on practical topics to enable you to communicate more fluently. 
  • revise the Passato Remoto and Congiuntivo Imperfetto (and maybe some of the other tenses mentioned above if needed) and learn two new tenses (both within Indicativo and Congiuntivo).
  • learn how to talk about your opinions, beliefs, doubts, wishes.
  • improve your ability to talk about yourself and your family, hobbies, the weather, describing people, past experiences, memories, future plans etc.
  • learn more about Italian culture through its food, music, films, history etc.
  • learn to deal with travel situations, such as booking hotels and restaurants.

Entry Requirements

You need to have intermediate knowledge of the language e.g. Italian Year 6 or equivalent.

You should be able to:

  • understand intermediate texts in Italian.
  • introduce yourself and talk about your day and your hobbies.
  • understand frequently used sentences/questions i.e. come ti chiami? come va? che tempo fa? che ore sono? dove sei andato in vacanza? cosa farai questo fine settimana? vorresti andare a Roma? saresti andato a vedere il concerto dei Pink Floyd a Pompei?
  • use Presente, Passato Prossimo and Imperfetto tenses in writing and verbally
  • use Futuro, Condizionale Presente and Condizionale Passato tenses in writing and verbally, use Congiuntivo Presente in writing and verbally. 
  • recognize and understand in reading and listening more complex tenses like Passato Remoto and Congiuntivo Imperfetto.

Please note that Italian Year 6 classes may vary slightly in the level studied, as this can depend on the pace and skills of each individual cohort.

Materials

Please bring a pen and a notebook. Access to other resources will be discussed in the first lesson.

Progression

We offer a Semester 2 course in the summer term. It begins immediately after Semester 1 and is an integral part of the course, the exact length of which will be decided in the spring term. After completing this course students can progress to the next level of the language.
