Overview

This course is for students who have already studied the language for a few years (Italian Year 4 or equivalent) and  have a good basic knowledge of Italian, including the present, the past, some future and conditional expressions.  You should be able to talk about a range of basic topics, giving opinions (‘secondo me’) and justification (‘perché’).

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will also be encouraged to re-read the materials used during lessons and refer to a grammar book.

What Will I Study?

We will be revising the vocabulary and the grammatical structures learned in the previous years.  You will learn new vocabulary and new grammatical structures and develop more fluency in speaking and listening.   You will have an opportunity to:

  • Read longer and more complex texts and complete relevant worksheets.
  • Write short essays and translate sentences and texts into Italian.
  • Listen to audio and video materials (with worksheets for you to complete).
  • Speak in class (pair/group work, short presentations, reading aloud).

Entry Requirements

To join at this level, you should have studied Italian for at least 4 years and  be able to:

  • understand short basic texts that use the present and the past tense, the future and a few conditionals (vorrei, mi piacerebbe).
  • Give a short presentation about a familiar topic using the present and the past tense with confidence.
  • write simple and well-structured sentences using the present,  the past indicative and some future expressions,  giving basic opinions and justifications (secondo me, perchè).

Please note that Italian Year 5 classes may vary slightly in the level studied, as this can depend on the pace and skills of each individual cohort.
