Join us on this 1.5 day workshop to learn how to make beautiful homeware items out of eco-resin, or Jesmonite. Jesmonite crafts have become increasingly popular on social media – people are drawn to this medium as it creates a beautiful matte stone look, allowing them to make contemporary items for their home.
Jesmonite is a compound material made of two parts, a liquid acrylic resin and a powder made of gypsum. When the liquid and powder are mixed, they create Jesmonite, a material that is incredibly easy to work with, durable and can be mixed or stained to make different colours. Materials and colours can also be added to the mix to give it the look of marble or terrazzo stone.
What Will I Study?
Crafting with Jesmonite is very similar to crafting with resin; both start as a liquid and then set to a solid, normally within a silicone mould. Popular Jesmonite items include coasters, dishes, candle holders, vases and jewellery, but you can create anything you want if you have the right mould!
On this short course, your tutor will guide you through the process of mixing jesmonite and using a mould. You could learn to create a beautiful terrazzo look by making terrazzo chips to be added into your project, or use dyes and pigments to create different looks for your home. You will also learn to sand and finish your items to take away at the end of the course.
Entry Requirements
No experience needed.
Materials
Most materials for this course are included in the course fee, including eco-resin, dyes and pigments. Please bring an apron and wear old clothing.
Disposable respirators/masks, gloves and protective equipment will be provided for the workshop. You may wish to purchase your own respirator, particularly if you are intending to continue working with resin from home or enrolling onto further resin workshops.
We will have a small stock of basic moulds, such as coasters, trinket trays and jewellery moulds, which you are very welcome to use. If there is something in particular you would like to make, we recommend that you bring your own mould, but this is entirely optional. Moulds can be purchased fairly cheaply online and purchasing your own will ensure that you can create in a style of your own choosing on the day.
Progression
It could give you confidence to try a new hobby at home or it could lead onto other workshops at the college.
