Overview

This course explores the process of creating a children’s picture book, from initial ideas through to visual development and presentation. The course will take into account the writing and storytelling aspects of picture books, but there will be a stronger focus on images, illustration and visual narrative. Students will develop practical skills in character creation, storyboarding, and visual storytelling while gaining an understanding of the picture book industry.

The tutor for this course is Zosienka, an illustrator, surface designer and picture-book maker based in Winchester. Zosienka's books have been published in multiple languages and she has worked with publishers around the world. She works in gouache, watercolour, acrylic, inks, pencils and digital media. What Will I Study?

Students will explore a variety of picture books and illustration styles while learning about common book formats and the practical stages of creating a picture book. 

The course will cover character design, backgrounds and settings, storyboarding, narrative structure and the relationship between text and image. Students will also develop an understanding of visual pacing and storytelling, while receiving guidance on building a portfolio and approaching the publishing industry professionally.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements - just a passion for storytelling and illustrated books!

Materials

Please bring along some paper, pencils and pens, as well as a notebook or sketchbook.
