In this relaxed and experimental one-day workshop, we’ll explore ways of interpreting the natural world in abstract. Inspired by artists who simplify, exaggerate and reimagine forms found in nature, we’ll use colour, texture, mark-making and composition to create expressive abstract artworks, influenced by landscapes, plants, water, weather and organic shapes.
Through painting, drawing, collage and mixed media techniques, we’ll investigate how natural forms can become starting points for imaginative and personal creative responses. This session is perfect for anyone wanting to loosen up their approach to art, experiment with abstraction and develop confidence with colour and composition. No previous experience is needed - just curiosity and a willingness to explore!
What Will I Study?
You can choose to work on paper, canvas, board, or in a sketchbook, with no pressure to produce a finished piece. Instead, the workshop focuses on experimentation, observation, and developing visual ideas through abstraction.
We will explore a variety of techniques such as simplifying natural forms into shapes and patterns, layering colour and texture, and using expressive mark-making to suggest movement, atmosphere, and energy. We will experiment with composition, scale, and colour relationships inspired by elements such as flowers, trees, rock formations, coastlines, skies, and changing seasons.
Students may work from photographs, collected natural objects, sketches, memory, or imagination to develop abstract responses to the natural environment.
Entry Requirements
None - this course is open to all with an interest in art!
