Local artist and AHED Leisure tutor Alison Kerslake led a delightful watercolour painting class for MHA Communities, a charity dedicated to supporting older people with mental and social stimulation. The event took place at St. Francis Church Hall in Chandlers Ford and brought together a group of twenty older adults for an inspiring and engaging morning of artistic expression.

The workshop aimed to provide an opportunity for participants to explore their creativity, learn new skills, and enjoy social interaction in a supportive environment. With Alison’s expert guidance, attendees were introduced to various watercolour techniques, from basic washes to more intricate details, while receiving tips to help them bring their artistic visions to life. The class was suitable for all skill levels, allowing both beginners and more experienced artists to participate and benefit.

Alison expressed her enthusiasm for teaching the class, saying, “It was wonderful to see the sense of accomplishment on everyone’s faces as they experimented with watercolours. Art can be a powerful way for foster communites, boost confidence and promote wellbeing for all ages”.

The session not only encouraged creativity but also provided a space for social interaction, helping to combat feelings of isolation that can often affect older adults. MHA Communities, which exists to help older people live later life well, continues to promote mental and social wellbeing through stimulating experiences.

Participants shared their appreciation for the event, with many expressing an interest in attending future classes. One attendee commented, “I haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years, and today reminded my why I loved it!”
This watercolour painting class is just one of many ways MHA Communities continues to combat loneliness and foster wellbeing among older people. Previous collaborations with Peter Symonds College include an Introduction to Philosophy lecture, led by Chris Higginson, and our next session will be an Introduction to Improvisation with Lexi Walsh.

Leisure Heads of Curriculum, Kay Cooper and Anna Harding, say “Alison’s class was such a lovely example of how creativity can be a bridge to social interaction and joy. It’s not just about the painting -  classes like these show how art can be a powerful tool for connection and wellbeing.”
