Student Support

Specialist staff

The deputy head of department coordinates the support provided and ensures your needs are met. We have a large team of specialist SpLD teachers and caseworkers trained in supporting students with specific needs e.g. learning differences, physical disabilities or sensory impairments.

Accessible learning environments

Most of our classrooms and facilities are physically accessible through use of ramps, lifts and modified desks if required. We make wide use of technology such as screen readers, hearing aids and communication devices. Across campus we have many sensory friendly places for those that require them.

Tailored teaching strategies

Our teachers are highly experienced in adapting their teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students with an EHCP. We can offer learning support assistants for indivudal support during lessons and ongoing keyworking support. At the beginning of the academic year, we carefully adjust timetables to allow for therapy sessions, medical appointment or additional breaks as required.

Health and personal care

We have a large network of health professionals from the College nurses to fully qualified counsellors.  If required, we will work closely to ensure that plans are put in place to support a range of health and personal needs e.g. personal care, emergency egress and/or moving and handling.

Emotional and social support

The Hub offers a large range of mental health and wellbeing support from drop in sessions, appointments, therapy dogs and popular groups e.g. Lego, ASConnections group, Craft and Create and The Hub Hangout. Our counselling team works alongside the Hub offering more structured talking therapy. Appointments run throughout the College day so students can be seen quickly. Our students can self-refer to the service and have a choice of four qualified and very experienced counsellors. Appointments are treated in the strictest confidence.

SEND INFORMATION EVENING

The aim of this evening is to provide a useful overview of specialist programmes and options available, such as supported internships, along with extra support available with regards to finance, care or support needs. This event is for both parents/carers and students. There are always a range of speakers and exhibitor stands by organisations such as Hampshire Achieves, Careers and Enterprise Company and local universities.
