Student Support

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Initial assessment

In the first instance, we may assess your English language skills upon entry to identify your proficiency level and specific needs. We undertake an evaluation of your educational background to understand your prior education and academic strengths.

Targeted language support

We offer English language support from a specialist teacher that can focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. They can also provide additional language support in respect of subject classes to help you understand and use subject-specific terminology.

Teaching strategies

Teachers work hard to meet the diverse needs of EAL students, e.g. using simpler language, visual aids and hands-on activities. They can support you with breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps and providing support at each stage. They encourage collaborative learning and can offer to pair you with native English-speaking peers for language practice and support.

Learning resources

We can provide access to bilingual dictionaries and subject-specific glossaries alongside language learning software designed to improve language learning skills.

Pastoral support

We have designated staff members who specialise in supporting EAL students and coordinating EAL programmes. They regularly organise activities  to help you integrate into the College community. We have a large Student Services department that through The Hub and counselling services can offer emotional and psychological support whilst adjusting to a new language and culture.

Exam access arrangements

We will meet with you to review any exam access arrangements required e.g. bilingual translation dictionaries and other appropriate arrangements.
