Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC)
People with ASC typically experience difficulties or misunderstandings in their daily lives as a result of their condition. People with ASC have many strengths, but may also be challenged by a range of communication issues, such as:
- difficulties in understanding the perspectives or feelings of others
- difficulties reading social cues and knowing when to speak or listen
- literal interpretation of what is said
- struggling to make eye contact
- preferring a rigid routine
- having over or under sensitivity to touch, taste, smell, light or colours and sounds.
Many people on the autistic spectrum experience high levels of anxiety and this can make studying at a large and busy college challenging. We are keen to help them overcome these barriers so that our autistic students have the same opportunities as our neurotypical students.
Learning plans
Peter Symonds excels in providing outstanding support for students with autism, ensuring a truly inclusive and nurturing environment. We develop individualised learning plans (for students with an EHCP and/or complex needs) which is tailored to each student's strengths and needs, regularly reviewing and updating these plans to ensure continuous progress.
Supportive staff
Our dedicated teams of caseworkers and mental health support staff work collaboratively to provide personalised support, including structured wellbeing support and emotional regulation techniques. We have created sensory-friendly spaces and adapted classrooms to minimise sensory overload, enhancing comfort and focus.
Teaching strategies
Our teaching strategies incorporate visual aids, clear routines, and differentiated instructions to cater to various learning styles. Academic accommodations such as assistive technology further support our students' success. We maintain regular communication with families, involving them in the decision-making process and providing resources and support.
Personal development
Our commitment to staff training on autism awareness and effective strategies ensures that our entire college community is knowledgeable and supportive. We regularly consult with charities such as Autism Hampshire and National Autistic Society. Additionally, we facilitate smooth transitions between educational stages and offer a wide range of inclusive enrichment activities, enabling students with autism to thrive academically, socially and personally.
ASC Connections
ASConnections is a social group that welcomes any student at Peter Symonds College who identifies with an autistic spectrum condition. Student can use this group as a time to relax on their own or to chat to others. There are the same activities on offer every week, which include playing board games, card games, craft, Lego and colouring. Students do not have to participate in activities if they prefer not to. They have guest speakers and themed activities, which are all optional and they let students know in advance.
