Information About The Post

Peter Symonds is a vibrant sixth form college in Winchester which has been rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ in every respect. We have a large team of committed and talented staff who are at the heart of our success.

The College is an independent Corporation with exempt charitable status, with powers, membership, roles and responsibilities set out in a legal framework and Instrument and Articles of Government. We seek a new governance professional to ensure that the governing Board operates within its powers, follows agreed and proper procedures and that its business is conducted smoothly and efficiently.  Duties include: advising and supporting the board; calling and administering the meetings of the Board and committees; facilitating the link between governors and senior staff; maintaining and reviewing policies. The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally with a governance qualification. They will have successful experience of working as a professional Clerk or similar, including taking responsibility for meeting statutory, procedural, regulatory and policy requirements. Knowledge of current developments in the sixth form sector and in FE governance is desirable. Their personal attributes will include excellent verbal and written skills, among which will be the ability to read and assimilate complex documents, produce high quality minutes and manage their own workload.

This is a part time post for 21 hours a week, full year. The working days must include Mondays which is when meetings usually take place, with the normal working pattern to be agreed on appointment. Some meetings continue into the evenings and you will also need to be flexible in case of special events and fluctuations in workload across the year. You will be required to work the great majority of your hours on the College site, although occasional home working may be possible. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the College and contribute to its ongoing success.

Our staff are at the heart of what we do at the College, we are proudly anti-racist and our motto is ‘Counting in ones’ which applies to staff as well as the students. We offer special leave for various special occasions, support from the Hub, staff-run groups, staff choir, Monday night football, regular staff forums, an inclusive, supportive and kind culture, no expectations to answer emails out of hours (with an automated message to alert the sender), lunch provided at all lunchtime meetings, ‘5 days of Christmas’ treats, end of term meals and activities and bike and computer loans to name but a few of our initiatives.

More details and information on how to apply are available on our website. If you require further assistance please phone the Personnel Department on 01962 857557 or email jobs@psc.ac.uk quoting the reference number.

We are dedicated to safeguarding the students in our care. To that end, a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure will be required in the event of an individual being offered a position within our College. Our staff undertake regular safeguarding and Prevent training and are subject to ongoing safeguarding scrutiny.
