Biology Science Technician

Peter Symonds is a vibrant sixth form college in Winchester which has been rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ in every respect. We have a large team of committed and talented staff who are at the heart of the success of the College. Our Biology department is one of the largest in the country. We have a team of Technicians working alongside the Teachers in the Faculty, supporting students in achieving exceptional results. Duties include preparing equipment for practical work, maintaining laboratory areas and liaison with staff in their work. The post is term time only plus Enrolment Week at the end of August. We are looking for one person as a full time technician, with the potential for a future team lead role. The ideal candidates will have a science qualification to level three or above, with a genuine interest in education and science. Experience working as a Science / Biology Technician would be an advantage but is not essential.

Information About The Post

Job Title:                   Science Technician (Biology)

 

Responsible to:       Senior Science Technician, Head of Subject and Head of Faculty, as part of the Biology team 

 

Duties will include:

 

  1. Preparing equipment for laboratory practical sessions.

 

  1. According to area of responsibility: preparing specimens, solutions and other chemicals.

 

  1. Cleaning equipment and laboratory surfaces following practical sessions.

 

  1. Inspecting laboratory for potential hazards such as worn cables, perished tubing etc.

 

  1. Maintaining laboratories and preparation areas in a safe and orderly fashion.

 

  1. Helping to manage the storage of teaching materials and equipment and keeping the subject area inventory.

 

  1. Stock-keeping and checking deliveries.

 

  1. Assisting with clerical tasks.

 

  1. Simple maintenance of equipment.

 

  1. Co-ordination of laboratory accommodation for teaching groups, which share equipment and accommodation.

 

  1. Maintaining Health and Safety standards and ensuring that records of such are kept up to date.

 

  1. Prioritising the safeguarding of all students and participating in training on safeguarding matters.

 

  1. Contributing to the elimination of unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation; advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
