Information About The Post
Peter Symonds is a vibrant sixth form college in Winchester which is proud to be rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ in every respect. We have a large team of committed and talented staff who are at the heart of the success of the College.
We are seeking a teacher to join our highly successful Mathematics department from Tuesday 25th August. We warmly welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced teachers, including those with secondary and/or sixth form experience, who bring an enthusiastic approach to teaching and learning.
We take great pride in supporting our staff and work closely with each individual to provide a professional environment that promotes both personal well-being and career development. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team that genuinely invests in its staff.
The successful candidate will hold a degree in Mathematics or a related subject and demonstrate a passion for teaching alongside a strong commitment to supporting student progress.
With approximately 1,500 students studying A Level Mathematics, the Mathematics department is the largest in the College. The team consists of 28 dedicated teachers who work within a highly collaborative environment, drawing on a wide range of specialist expertise. The department is well organised and benefits from extensive shared resources. New members of staff are paired with an experienced colleague and are fully supported in all aspects of college life during their induction.
We follow the OCR (MEI) specification for A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Edexcel for A Level Statistics, and AQA for GCSE Maths resit. Each course is overseen by a Head of Subject, and colleagues with additional responsibilities support students through curriculum-specific enrichment in Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth Mathematics Extension.
We work closely with staff to shape teaching timetables that support the needs of our students while also recognising each teacher’s individual expertise, professional strengths and career aspirations.
Our staff are at the heart of everything we do at the College. We are proudly anti-racist, and our motto, ‘Counting in ones’, applies equally to staff and students. We foster an inclusive, supportive and kind culture, underpinned by a range of wellbeing and community initiatives. These include special leave for a variety of occasions, support from the Hub, staff-run groups such as the choir and Monday night football, regular staff forums, and practical wellbeing measures such as no expectation to respond to emails out of hours (supported by an automated response system). Staff also benefit from lunch provided at lunchtime meetings, seasonal celebrations such as our ‘5 days of Christmas’, end-of-term meals and activities, and access to bike and computer loans, among other initiatives.
