BBC Sports Presenter Returns For Annual Awards Evening
Peter Symonds College, Winchester, celebrated the academic and personal achievements of the 2023 cohort at its recent Awards Evening and welcomed back alumni Betty Glover as guest speaker and co-host, 10 years after she left the College.
More than 70 students received awards for a range of merits, from academic excellence to participation in college life, contribution to the community and overcoming challenging personal circumstances. The event also incorporated three new awards:
- Vicky Neale Award for Extraordinary Contribution to Mathematics
- Naomi Irwin Cup for Kindness, and
- Peter Symonds Award for Community Participation
Principal Sara Russell praised the efforts of students of 2021-2023 and the families, staff and wider communities who had supported them, noting the tremendous upheaval they had faced in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic.
Sara said: “Tonight marks the close of one chapter and the start of another. Our students have yet again, done us incredibly proud and risen to challenges that have appeared. We hope we have equipped them with valuable life lessons needed to make their own path in the world beyond Peter Symonds. We are so proud of each and everyone one of our students and wish them all the very best.”
Betty, who returned to Hampshire to film for BBC 1's Football Focus, shared with the audience the trials and tribulations of her own career journey and the importance of persistence, resilience and getting a foot in the door.
Betty, a TV and radio presenter predominantly working for BBC Sport, covering Final Score, BBC 1's Football Focus, Women's Super League and 5live sport. She is the BBC’s sports reporter on The Hundred cricket and recently presented BBC's England netball coverage on BBC 2. Betty also co-hosts a new F1 podcast, The Fast and The Curious, alongside Christian Hewgill and Radio 1's Greg James.
In attendance were students, their families, staff, award sponsors, college governors and VIPs associated with the College’s history and heritage.
