BA students attend SEND symposium

Our BA (Hons) students at Bournemouth, who are in their final year on the SEND degree pathway, had the opportunity to attend an online symposium by Professor Christopher Robertson this week. Christopher is an independent academic and author, policy analyst and adviser to educational organisations, with a particular interest in special educational needs and disability policy and implementation. As chair of the SENCO Forum national e-community he engages in lobbying government to define and regulate the role of special educational needs co-ordinators more carefully, to ensure that SENCOs are appropriately trained and deployed in schools, early years settings and post -16 provision.
In his lecture Christopher reflected on the role of the special educational needs co-ordinator and its evolution over the past thirty years. He referred to SEN/D policy in England and considered whether the SENCO ‘role designation’ has helped or hindered the development of inclusive provision and practice.
This symposium provided the students with a great opportunity to keep up to date with current research and to consider how this interrelates with practice in their settings.
