Overview

The Level 2 Certificate in Barbering will prepare you to enter the specific sector of men's hairdressing as a junior stylist. You will learn the basics of shaping and cutting men's hair and facial hair and by the end of the course, you will be able to create a basic look for men, using club cutting, trimming, tapering, clipper and scissor over comb skills.

What Will I Study?

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for barbering and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a junior barber. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include: 

  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
  • Cut men's hair using basic techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish men's hair
  • Create basic outlines and detailing in hair

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to advise and consult, and provide a range of cutting and barbering services specifically for men's hair, which includes shaving and creating facial hair shapes. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills, all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to achieve nine credits from optional units which include (this list is not exhaustive): assist with shaving services, relax hair, perm and neutralize hair, plait and twist hair and colour and lighten men's hair.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this course, however, a good standard of English at GCSE grade A-C / 4-9 is preferred. If you are aged between 16-18 and do not already have English and Maths GCSEs (grade A-C /4-9) then you will be required to complete these alongside your course. Applicants should have good interpersonal and communication abilities, as they will be dealing with customers within the service industry.

Materials

Learners will need to purchase a barbering kit, text book and a uniform. Further information and order forms are available at interview.

Progression

This qualification will prepare you for employment as a junior barber, or as a unisex barber if you have an existing hairdressing qualification. Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with The Hair Council and join the British Barbers' Association. As a junior barber, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • commercial barber shops or salons
  • independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • television, film, theatre and media
  • armed services
  • HM prison service
  • cruise liners
  • hospitals/care homes

You could also choose to develop your skills further by undertaking a Level 3 Diploma in Barbering.
