Minimum Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs at Grades A - C including English and Mathematics. A strong commitment and passion for dance is essential for this course and you will need to have prior experience in any dance genre.

Course Content

If you are passionate about pursuing dance and want to broaden your knowledge and understanding of this subject then studying Dance at Peter Symonds may be the right choice for you.

The study of any subject at A level can be a big jump from GCSE, before you choose this subject you should familiarise yourself with the topics you will study and the way in which they are tackled.

You will study:

  • Contemporary dance techniques (plus some Ballet, Jazz & Tap)
  • Choreography
  • Dance analysis (focussing on Contemporary and Jazz dance)
  • Dance history
  • Safe practice in the dance studio

Methods of Teaching

Lessons will be a combination of practical dance classes and interactive theory lessons.

You will learn repertoire from professional dance works, participate in workshops with profesionals and see many live performances at theatres such as Sadler's Wells, the Royal Opera House and Pineapple Studios.

You will learn the choreographic skills needed to create your own choreography and the performance skills needed to project your ideas effectively to an audience. There will be opportunities to perform in shows including the Symonds Dance Show and we have in the past performed at the Theatre Royal, Winchester and The Royal Ballet School.

AS Level

Solo Choreography & Performance in a Duo/Trio 50%

Written Exam 50%

Group Choreography, solo Performance & Group Perfomance 50%

Written Exam 50%

Financial Implications

You will be asked to opt into trips at the start of the course and these will be subsidised. The cost of workshops will be £50 each year. The college does have a Student Support Fund for those who have difficulty meeting these costs.
